A Five Year Old Learns the Alphabet

Discussion in our Introduction to Sociology class today centered around symbols and the social construction of language.

What you see below is the effort of a five year old kindergardener concentrating diligently on constructing her letters. Not too far to follow is linking these symbols to construct words. Understanding their meaning will begin to occur over the next few months as well.

  1. I know from personal experience that pushing to hard can have the same effects as just letting things go. By the time I was a junior in high school I was truly bored with school but that came more from my own ambitions. I played at least two sports a year which gave me little time to enjoy being a youth, which contributed greatly to the problem. I said all that to simply say this, it depends on the persons physiological makeup as to whether being encouraged to excell at such a young age will pose a threat to burn out or bordum later in life.

  2. I don't think it's so much pushing, but this is when it all starts clicking. It's absolutely amazing!
